A summer road trip can turn into an unforgettable adventure—or a stressful detour—depending on how well your vehicle is prepared. Before you pack up the snacks and hit the road, it’s worth taking a little time to make sure your car is road-trip ready. At Yeargan’s Top Notch Automotive, we want to help you travel with peace of mind. Here’s your essential vehicle prep checklist.
✅ Check Your Fluids
Fluids are the lifeblood of your vehicle. Before a long drive, make sure the following are topped off and in good condition:
Engine oil: Fresh oil ensures optimal engine performance, especially in hot weather.
Coolant/antifreeze: Crucial for keeping your engine from overheating.
Brake fluid: Low or dirty fluid can compromise braking performance.
Transmission fluid: Often overlooked, but vital for smooth gear shifts.
Windshield washer fluid: You’ll want a clear view, especially on dusty highways.
🛠️ We can quickly inspect and top off fluids during a pre-trip inspection.
✅ Inspect Your Tires
Good tires are key to safety and fuel efficiency on the road.
Tread depth: Make sure it’s above 2/32". Bald tires are dangerous, especially in rain.
Air pressure: Check all four tires and your spare. Proper pressure improves handling and mileage.
Alignment and balance: Vibrations or pulling to one side? Let’s fix that before your drive.
💡 Ask us about a tire rotation or alignment check before your trip.
✅ Test the Battery
A dead battery can ruin your trip before it starts. If your battery is over 3 years old or has shown signs of weakness (slow starts, dim lights), it’s worth testing it.
Look for corrosion on terminals.
Make sure the battery is securely mounted.
Replace if needed—don’t take chances far from home.
🔋 We offer battery testing and replacements at our shop.
✅ Check the Brakes
If your brakes are squeaking, grinding, or taking longer to stop, now is the time to address it—not halfway through the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Pads and rotors should be in good condition.
Brake fluid should be clear and at the proper level.
🚦 We’ll perform a brake inspection to ensure you're stopping safely.
✅ Inspect Belts and Hoses
Hot weather and long driving hours can stress out worn belts and hoses. A snapped belt or leaking hose can quickly lead to a breakdown.
Look for cracks, frays, or swelling.
Listen for squealing noises when the engine is running.
👨🔧 Let our technicians take a look under the hood before you hit the road.
✅ Check the A/C System
A working air conditioner isn’t just about comfort—it can also help keep you alert while driving.
If your A/C isn’t cooling properly, get it checked before you go.
Strange smells or noises from vents? We can fix that too.
🌬️ We’re currently offering a FREE A/C performance check.
✅ Pack Smart Emergency Supplies
Even with the best prep, things can go wrong. Don’t forget:
Jumper cables
Tire repair kit or spare
First aid kit
Flashlight
Water and snacks
Phone charger & portable power pack
Phone number for the Technet Professional Network of elite auto shops
📦 Ask us for a checklist of essentials if you’re not sure what to bring.
