Spot Brake Problems Before They Become Dangerous

At Yeargan’s Top Notch Automotive, we know your brakes are one of the most critical safety systems in your vehicle. Whether you're commuting through Carrboro or gearing up for a summer road trip to the mountains, knowing how to recognize early signs of brake trouble can help you avoid costly repairs—or worse, a dangerous situation on the road.

Here’s how to spot potential brake issues before they become serious:

👉 Strange Noises When Braking:

If you hear:

  • Squealing – Your brake pads may be worn and need replacing.

  • Grinding – Metal-on-metal contact is a serious warning sign. Stop driving and have your brakes inspected immediately.

  • Clunking or rattling – This could indicate loose or broken hardware in the braking system.

👉 Vibrations or Pulsing:

A vibrating brake pedal often points to warped brake rotors. This can happen from intense use or overheating—like driving through the mountains or towing heavy loads.

👉 Longer Stopping Distances:

If it’s taking longer than usual to come to a complete stop, your brake pads could be worn, or there may be a problem with the hydraulic system. Either way, don’t ignore it.

👉 Brake Warning Light:

If your dashboard brake light turns on, don’t brush it off. It could signal low brake fluid, worn pads, or an issue with the anti-lock braking system (ABS). It’s always best to have us check it out to avoid a serious failure.

👉 Spongy or Soft Brake Pedal:

If your brake pedal sinks to the floor or feels unusually soft, there might be air in the brake lines or a fluid leak. Both can severely affect braking performance and should be addressed immediately.
